Breeding Standard
STANDARD OF PERFECTION FOR THE LONG FACED TUMBLERS

Structural Characteristics

HEAD - As large as possible, proportionate to size of body.  Round in profile, rising sharply with a forward sweep off the wattle and continuing perfectly round to the back of the head, then merging imperceptible with the neck.  The top of the head to be directly over the eye.  Full at cheeks and between eyes and mouth opening thus giving a broad and round appearance resembling a sphere from the frontal view.  FAULTS:  lacking top skull because of flat or oval shaped from the side view.  Lacking back skull because of back part of skull falling off abruptly and not merging imperceptibly with the neck.  Pinched face caused by lack of width over the wattle.  Lack of fullness at gape or checks. . . . . points: 15.

BEAK - Close fitting mandibles of medium length and equal thickness, wide at abase and thick in profile giving a blunt, boxed effect and not coming to a sharp point.  Beak length from bird's frontal to tip to be approximately the same as it's width at base when view from the top.  The beak should be straight set so if a line between the mandibles was extended it would pass through the eye core at the bottom of the eye.  FAULTS:  Too long, too thin or finch type beaks.  Mandibles of unequal substance.  Incorrect beak setting (either low set or down set) discolored or stained beaks.  Disqualifications:  Twisted, crooked, crossed or otherwise deformed mandibles, excessive trimming chopping or tampering of beaks….. Points:  15.

WATTLE - Small, neat fine in texture and white in color.  Close fitting so as to appear an integral part of the beak rather than set upon it.  FAULTS:  Too large or too course…points:  4.

EYE - Bold and centrally placed between the frontal, top and back skull.  Pearl white iris with pupil black and as small as possible.  FAULTS:  Red, yellow or gravel iris color, short faced appearance caused by eye placed too far forward in head.  Disqualifications:  Bull eyes.  Broken or split pupil….. points 4.

CERE - Small and threadlike of fine texture.  Closely feathered around beak and same color as beak.  In case of Beards, same color as upper mandible.  FAULTS: Wrong colored cere.  Coarse cere…..points 4.

NECK - Broad as base and tapering slightly to the throat, slightly arched and of medium length providing a very full foundation for the head.  FAULTS: Long and/or thin neck…..points: 6.

BODY - Medium sized body that is short, cobby and wedge shaped.  Chest broad, deep and well rounded, carried well forward.  General appearance is on of cobbiness with well rounded contours from all points of view.  The line of the back, rump and through the tail will be smooth and blended.  FAULTS: Bulge or hump in rump area.  Narrow chest, shallow keel…..points 7.

FLIGHTS and TAIL - Flights slightly folded, broad and short with coverts closing neatly over the rump.  Tail short, tightly folded and slightly tapered, allowing the flights to almost meet ½ inch from the end of the tail.  There should be twelve main tail feathers.  The tail should not touch the surface when the bird is standing at attention.  FAULTS: Wide, loose tail.  Tail consistently touching the floor, excessively long flights and/or tail, coverts protruding above the rump (roach wing), disqualification:  Obvious break between secondary and primaries.  Less than ten (10) primary flights, less and twelve (12) tail feathers.  Dropped flights…..points: 10.

LEGS and FEET - Legs stout, medium length, and set well apart.  Feet of CL tumblers should be small with shanks and feet a bright coral red in color and free of feathers.  Muff tumblers should have five to six inch muffs that are profuse with the outer edge forming a half circle and meeting the hocks without break.  The hocks are to be profusely feathered with points just clearing the floor.  FAULTS:  Discolored toe nails, legs too long or too short in proportion to the body.  Feathers on shank or feet (CL), broken muff feathers, short (Grouse) muffs.  Disqualifications:  Crooked or deformed toes, straddle leg…..points: 5.

CARRIAGE - Slightly upright bold and jaunty.  Eye should be carried directly over the ball of the feet.  Beak held so that a line drawn between the mandibles would be horizontal to the floor.  Tip of tail should not be more than one half inch above floor.  FAULTS: Down faced appearance, will not show or stand properly…..points:  8.

SIZE:  Proportion and balance to be more important than size.  A medium sized bird which stands nine to ten inches high which is the preferred size…..points: 4.

FEATHER QUALITY and COLOR - Feathers to be fine, smooth, and soft with good breadth.  Feathers should be profuse and reasonable loose on head and neck to give desired fullness, becoming closer and tighter fitting on body, wigs, and tail.  The color appearance should be rich, sound and lustrous throughout of even shade, well extended into the roots of the quills.  Refer to Section II.  FAULTS: Rough, course or uneven feathering.  Pin holes in flights or tail, number of primary flights of baldheads and beards other than eight to twelve primaries, excessive colored feathers where white is required, crease in neck and/or chest.  Sooty ground color in barred colors.  Dark colored heads in mealy and cream bars.  Disqualifications:  Excessive selfs…..points: 18
